Background

Security staff had no way to see elevator state from the lobby desk.

Problem

Controller signals were only available inside the machine room.

Solution

An STM32 board polls the controller over Modbus RTU on RS-485 and drives the panel display, with a watchdog and fail-safe indication on link loss.

Features

  • Live floor and direction indication
  • Fault and emergency lamps
  • Link-loss fail-safe state
  • Configurable unit addressing via DIP switches

Architecture

  1. 1STM32 firmware with cooperative scheduler
  2. 2RS-485 Modbus RTU master
  3. 3LED driver stage

Challenges

  • Electrical noise in the machine room required opto-isolation and shielded cabling.

Lessons Learned

  • In the field, EMC problems look exactly like software bugs — measure before you debug.
